Elements of Interior Design

		Line defines space with direction and movement, and implies style and mood. Vertical and horizontal lines define formality, while diagonal and spiral lines define movement and energy.
		Space is created by connecting three or more lines. Its form is three-dimensional and is comprised of time, length, width, depth and space.
		Texture provides surface interest and its touch can invoke feelings. It alters space and light by being tactile or visual. Texture has gender qualities; rough surfaces are mixed with smooth and delicate ones.
		Light affects colour and texture, whether it be natural or man-made.
		Colour is the essence of an area, and a tool to affect mood, emotion and attract the eye.

Principles of Design

		Scale is the relationship of objects to each other and to people.
		Proportion is the relationship of parts to each other and to the whole area as well.
		Balance is the quality which creates equilibrium and where interacting forces find resolution.
		Rhythm is the quality that moves the eye from one area to another.
		Emphasis is a manner of drawing attention to something, giving it levels of importance.
		Unity expresses a consistent aim of using the elements and principles in a cohesive manner.
